Give hope to them

Thousands of Syrian refugees in the neighboring countries are suffering from severe psychological and social consequences because of painful memories and tragedies they have encountered during the war and the conflict in Syria … join us to give hope to them.

Mental health and psycho-social support are considered among the basics for developing the collective and individual capacities to think, interact with, and be influenced by humans and to earn a living as well as to enjoy life. Based on this principle, strengthening, protecting and recovering mental health are observed as vital concerns for individuals and groups, especially those who have fled from the horrors of war and destruction in Syria, and who have lived terrible times seeking safety and security.

Bombardment sounds, terror scenes, loss of parents, and injuries that many civilians have borne for the rest of their lives were enough to leave unimaginably devastating memories and anguishes for the Syrian people. These memories have deprived them of sleep, disturbed their moods, and prevented them from normally continuing their lives along with preventing them from making a living. As for children, such memories have robbed their innocent childhood dreams, and their behaviors became coupled with war, and scenes of violence, human remains, and ruins making them confined in their fears.

For all of this, SEMA has launched its Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) Program for the Syrian refugees including children and elderly to support them and extend to them a helping hand.

The program aims at improving the psychological recovery and preventing mental disorders that many Syrian refugees in Turkey suffer from as a result of war and displacement. It aims also at offering care and reducing women’s and children’s feeling of helplessness.

This will be through effective strategies and interventions that SEMA has developed to help these people in its MHPSS center in Gaziantep. Such strategies are based on reinforcing the mental health of children and adults and empowering them to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles through following a wide spectrum of procedures that would increase the chances of more people to enjoy a better mental health.

More than 1000 Syrian refugees have benefited from the Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support services provided by the center; most of them are children and women.

The program comprise the following services and activities:

1. Intervention services in early childhood, and they include:

  • Home visits for pregnant women.
  • Focusing on psycho-social activities in the period preceding school enrollment.
  • Integrating nutrition interventions with psycho-social assistance for the disadvantaged groups.

2. Provision of needed support for children, including:

  • Skills building program.
  • Children and youth development program.

3. Women empowerment in psycho-social support; the program includes:

  • Improving women’s benefit from education through peer-to-peer support sessions, psychological education, and group support sessions.

4. Provision of needed social support for elderly, including:

  • Initiatives of advocacy and care for elderly;
  • Conducting group support sessions that are special for the elderly, and integrating them in activities that improve their social network.

5. Programs targeting vulnerable groups, among whom are those affected by the conflict and disasters, particularly those people who experienced new displacement crises. This program includes: post-disaster psycho-social interventions.

6. Activities aiming at improving the mental health at schools. Such activities comprise:

  • Visiting children at schools and providing them along with their parents with consultations and psychological support.
  • Assisting teachers in identifying children with behavior problems and helping them to overcome such issues.

7. Interventions aiming at strengthening the mental health of mothers, who lost one of their children in the war, and assisting other mothers to develop a positive relationship to deal with their children. This program includes stress prevention program.

8. Program of prevention of violence resulting from a psychological disorder caused by war.

9. Community development program, which includes “conscious local communities” initiatives.

10. Protecting rights and opportunities, and providing care for those who suffer from mental disorders.

Join us through donating for the campaign and sharing it to revive hope for these people.
