The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence against women is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. “16 Days,” as it has become known, was launched and continues to be coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership

The dates for the campaign were chosen to link violence against women and human rights and emphasize that gender-based violence against women is a violation of human rights: since 1991, the campaign has been active between November 25, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day.

This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day; December 1, World AIDS Day; December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacar, and the international day for people with disabilities in December 3.

SEMA was part of this campaign for the past 3 years, which included more than 6000 organizations since 1991, which has reached about 30 million over the past years.

Campaign’s slogan performed by SEMA for this year will be #I_Have_a_Dream, which aims to:

  • Raise awareness of gender-based violence against women as a human rights issue at local and national level inside Syria.
  • Strengthen local action on violence against women against women and build the capacity of humanitarian workers on gender-based violence issues
  • Highlighting the local experiences of Syrian women inside Syria who have contributed to raising awareness within the community as a role in supporting Syrian women under the current circumstances.

The activities of this year’s campaign will vary to include:

  • Awareness Sessions for women and adolescents to introduce gender-based violence and encourage them to express themselves and their dreams.
  • Awareness sessions for men and adolescents to introduce issues of gender-based violence and encourage them to support women in society to reach their goals.
  • Recreational activities for women and girls during this period in all SEMA centers.
  • Highlighting Syrian women who have worked on projects to empower and support Syrian women.
  • Training for humanitarian workers from different sectors on the basic principles of gender-based violence and how to refer safe.
  • Organizing a ceremony honoring the cadres of organizations working in the protection sector in both Idlib and Aleppo northern countryside.
  • Organize a ceremony in the head office, especially the review of the activities of the team in the projects inside
