Given the huge number of Syrian refugees suffering from psychological, social and mental health problems, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in addition to the acute emotional and behavioral problems, as a result of the harsh, life-threatening persistent War Conditions over the past years. Carrying out effective mitigation and response measures to alleviate the suffering and to enhance the health and well-being of Syrian families (parents and children) were essential and priority for SEMA and SEMA team.

Given the huge number of Syrian refugees suffering from psychological, social and mental health problems, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in addition to the acute emotional and behavioral problems, as a result of the harsh, life-threatening persistent War Conditions over the past years. Carrying out effective mitigation and response measures to alleviate the suffering and to enhance the health and well-being of Syrian families (parents and children) were essential and priority for SEMA and SEMA team.

Despite the prominent role and support provided by The Turkish Government towards Syrian refugees in Turkey, particularly in health, some challenges and barriers are still being faced, especially the language barrier that may affect the access of refugees to the relevant interventions needed, with a bit delay or difficulty.

With humble resources, and concrete efforts by SEMA and SEMA team. Such vital, and life-saving interventions for groups and individuals, are being provided through specialized centers in Turkey. Those centers are accessible to the majority overwhelming of Syrian families, and are provided with a comprehensive approach that focuses on promoting the mental and psychological health of parents and children through consequent main stages: prevention, awareness raising, response, and monitoring and evaluation.

The number of beneficiaries reached:

  • (922) as a total number of beneficiaries.
  • (370) as a total number of individual sessions.
  • (552) as a total number of group sessions.

 

 

Success stories:

First story: (female)

Psychiatric Disorder: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

The Case story:

Ms. S, aged 26, single and working in a barbershop. Her financial status is very bad.

On 24.6.2018. She got a stray gunshot in her head during a celebration in an open place outside the barbershop, this affected her with a hemiplegia (upper and lower limbs paralysis), in addition to losing her job and her social life, and this led to a feeling of loneliness, and an acute depression.

The Symptoms:

Sadness, hopelessness, a state of constant agitation and nervousness, intrusive memories with repeated images and sounds of the accident, nightmares in addition to a sleeping and eating disorders.

The Intervention:

  • PSS sessions.
  • Receiving treatment sessions through narrative exposure therapy (a specific therapeutic technique in trauma treatment) to deal with people exposed to trauma.
  • Referral to the physiotherapy center to receive treatment sessions.

 The Case condition:

  • The woman continues to receive treatment sessions and has shown significant improvement related to depression related symptoms.
  • The woman began to receive intensive physiotherapy sessions and this had an effect on the improvement of limbs movement and reflected positively on her overall health condition.
